RAYOGRAMS...

We also had a Rayogram workshop in the photography dark room. This is basically using the light in the enlarger machines in the dark room, to expose actual objects that have been placed on top of the photographic light sensitive paper. We were told to bring some objects in that we wanted to photograph...

This was the random assortment that I took with me! I thought the necklaces and the headphones would look really good photographed in this method..

... and I was right. This was my first TEST STRIP. I covered over most of the paper firstly, and using 5 seconds each time I moved it down a little more. So the lightest part only had 5 seconds of exposure, and the next bit has 10, next 15 and so on so forth. Towards the end you can't really see a clear line, but I think it looks good around 20 seconds ish... (not sure why there is a white line through it though.. )

This one had an exposure of 20 seconds, and I think that was just about right! I really like how the little flower type shapes look a lot like an x-ray! They have a sort of glow around them, and you can see the little details in them if you look closely. I also like how bold and crisp white the beads of the chain have shown up.

THE ARMY MEN. To be honest I knew these would look great!! I found it quite surprising how much detail seems to show up in these images. I love how clear the outline of these little men are!

At this point, Laura shouted 'WE'VE ONLY GOT 5 MINUTES LEFT!' and I wanted moooore!!

I went for the hole sheet, and thought I'd mix it up a little and use a few of my objects. I think maybe I should of made it a bit busier and maybe overlapped some stuff? I like how the contrast is so bold, although I didn't get time to play about using the filters to change the contrast..

I definitely want to do some more of this!! Even if it's just for fun and not my animation!

Stop Motion Workshop...

This morning we had our first stop motion workshop! We were put into to groups and given a couple of toys to have a play about with!!

We could make them do what ever we wanted them to! As this is our first attempt at stop motion and we only had about half an hour to do it.. It's slightly crap...

I think as it gets to the end it get a little bit better.. As we got the hang of it a little more..

I enjoyed this session, and thought it was really helpful in giving me a go at stop motion and testing out a method that I am thinking about possibly using in for my own animation. We used a programme called 'I can animate', but there are lots of other programmes that can be used to put together a stop motion too.

Animators...

Before getting into this project, I thought it would a good idea to look at some existing animations, and the different methods that can be used to create them!

I am putting this one up first as I just LOVE it. A friend had posted this video on facebook, and I have not forgotten about it!

This animation, obviously, is done with graffiti on a wall, was made by a group of artists who call themselves 'Blu'. I think one of the reason why I love this so much is that it's done with the real and natural walls and buildings in the world, but then combined with the hand drawn graffiti and the white trail of paint that is left behind! Slightly like a snail rail, but a trail showing where the animation have evolved from.

This is a clip from Disney's 'The Princess and the Frog', which has been made with the traditional hand drawn aesthetics...

This is a clip from Disney Pixar's new film, 'Tangled'. Although it looks extremely similar, this one is however created using Computer Graphics rendering. Can YOU tell the difference?

Although I am definitely not going to use this method of animation for my own, I wanted to be able to compare the other different techniques to this one.

This is another stop motion that my dad showed me once...

Not only is this a lovely song.. its such a lovely animation that accompanies it perfectly! I think this is a good example of making an animation along to music.. As I feel like this is what the creator of this thought about while listening to the song maybe?

Another way of creating an animation if a flip book! This is something I have tried out before and been reasonably successful, but looking on youtube I found a few that were way more impressive, including this one:

I love this as its so rough and raw, hand drawn images on what looks like a notebook. I'd like to think this is something someone did during class or something! Although it's quite long so would of used up a lot of pages! Thankfully we're only doing 30 seconds! I definitely want to try something like this out, as I really interested in using hand drawn image for my animation.

...START DATE 21/03/11.

THE BRIEF. To communicate a piece of music into an animated series of images.

We have been allocated a piece of music, to create an animation in response to our emotional reaction.

This is the music that I have been assigned ...

[ignore the picture on the vid]

Before even seeing the name of this track, straight away you can here the 'tribal' feel to it. The first thing it makes me think of is AFRICA. Mainly an African tribe, dancing and celebrating, lots of drums and shouting..

... I wonder what they're saying.

Words that come to mind:

HAPPY
PRAISING
PARTY?
RHYTHM
DRUMS
BEAT

In my sketchbook, I started by making a spider diagram of things that this song made me think of...

Also the brief asks for 3 words that come to mind while listening to the track:

Then I decided to look at some images online of tribe people..

Although I want to stay away from simple tribe connections, as I feel it's a bit too simple and BLATANT, do want to try and sneak little aspects in.. but maybe with a twist.. I love these images as they show these tribe people in all their glory! They also show some of the things we may find strange, but they see as a tradition.
